Welcome To The Home Of It’s Not That Bad
It’s the show that does its best to defend the unfairly maligned movies, to find the silver linings in the films deemed “less than great”. Every week, host Jason Whissell is joined by a guest to discuss a movie that has been poorly rated by the critics or by the fans. We do our very best to find good things to say about them, and to show those flicks in a light that you may have not noticed before. We are also always happy to hear what movies you think should be covered, as well as what you thought of the movies themselves. We’ll be posting blogs on here as well as keep you updated as to what to expect in the coming months.

Ep. 91 – Howard The Duck

It’s our two year anniversary and we’re going to celebrate it the only way we know how…by watching a film about violence, unwanted displacement and bestiality. There may be something not right with us…but not in our movie selection, because we’re about tell the world that Howard The Duck is not that bad.

There Can Only Be One – Metallica

As arguably the biggest metal band of all time, Metallica has cemented their place in music history by delivering album after album of rock solid bangers. The hardest part…picking just one song off each. Brian Colburn from My Weekly Mixtape returns to go through 15 albums in the Metallica studio discography to pick our one above all from each disc. Not an easy task at all.
Below, you will find the playlists from both of our picks. Be sure to have a listen, and when you’re done, let us know in the comments below which songs you would have chosen from the vast Metallica discography.

Ep. 90 – Smokin’ Aces

Edgy script with lots of action, check. Cast chock-a-block full of established and up-and-coming actors…check. Reasonable budget, check. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing as we’re about to show you as we prove that Smokin’ Aces is not that bad.

Ep. 89 – The Master Of Disguise

What if someone were to make a movie that was so unfunny, so universally panned that the star wouldn’t be in another film for 9 years. Crazy, right? So crazy that it might just work. That’s why we’re here to prove to you that The Master Of Disguise is not that bad.

There Can Only Be One – Tesla

With a combination of rock, blues and southern soul, this California quintet has been killing it since album one. Now, Sean Faust and I go through their studio discography, picking one song per album, in our quest to make the all-star playlist of Tesla.
In the show, Sean mentioned that he is donating proceeds from sales of his song Gin Asylum to help cat caregivers whenever and wherever he can. If you can, please help him in his quest to help by buying a copy of the song. https://seanfaust.bandcamp.com/track/gin-asylum
Below, you will find the picks from both Sean and I. As of recording, The Great Radio Controversy is not available for streaming on Spotify. However, both songs that we picked from that album were available on a greatest hits album, so those songs were added from that release. Be sure to enjoy the songs and let us know in the comments section below what your favourite Tesla songs are.

Ep. 88 – Son Of The Mask

In science, when trying to replicate the effects of an experiment, one must have all the same elements of the original project. In Hollywood, when trying to replicate the effects of a breakout hit, all you need is money, a script and actors willing to jump in even if they weren’t in the original. The episode’s film may not be a lightning rod of awesome, but we’re going to do our best to prove to you that Son Of The Mask is not that bad.

Ep. 87 – Constantine

The month of February usually brings movies about love, romance and the pursuit of all things Valentines. In 2005, we got a story about demons, Satan and the eternal battle between heaven and hell. Maybe not first date fare, but no need to fear because we’re hell to tell you that Constantine is not that bad.

The Social Media Peekaboo Game and July Updates
To say that it’s been a chaotic week for those on social media is probably putting it lightly. New platforms are sprouting up like weeds after a rainstorm, and old ones are starting to show the cracks in the foundation. It’s a hard time for independent creators of art to get their works seen and heard. Where there once was a stable platform now how has people counting their views like they’re rationing jelly beans on a deserted island.
For me, I try to keep things simple. When not producing these shows, I have a very busy personal life and I don’t want to take away my family time by posting on multiple platforms. With that said, however, there will be some upcoming changes to ways that you can stay up to date on the shows that we’re preparing.
Twitter: Yes, I know…the current state of the blue bird has many people running to the hills. However, it is still viable thus far and is the place most people will probably see posts about releases and calls for comments. If you are still on Twitter, you can find everything about the It’s Not That Bad @notthatbadcast and you can find There Can Only Be One at @OnlyOneCast
Instagram: For other platforms, I will be consolidating the feeds of both shows onto one account. It’s just easier for all of us that, but mainly me. I’m lazy. You’ll be able to follow both shows over on “the ‘Gram” at @notthatbadcast. New releases will be posted in Reels while calls for comments on upcoming episodes will be posted as regular posts.
Spoutible: Once again, both shows feeds are consolidated and can be found @notthatbadcast. Again, I’ll be posting calls for comments as well as new episode links.
As for this space, the blog is going to be used much more frequently. There will be a comments section at the end of each blog. Please take the time to post your thoughts about the movies we’re preparing, the artists we’ll be talking about and any other thoughts you may have. As well, there will be updates on some of the things we are planning for down the road. There has been talk about creating merch as well as some special subscriber content. I’d also like to know your thoughts about Patreon. A little background here, when it comes to things I put out into the world, I preach a little optimism through pessimism. By that, I mean that I expect the worst and if the worst doesn’t happen, then I am pleasantly surprised. To that same token, if the worst does happen, well at least I was right. How that relates here is that my fear is that I could make a Patreon account, post subscriber-only content and it would be like adding tumbleweeds to a desert. So the big question this week is, “If these shows created Patreon-specific subscriber content, or we created subscriber content on Spotify, would you be interested enough to subscribe?”
UPCOMING EPISODES – It’s Not That Bad

On Saturday, July 8th, I’ll be recording with our good friend Lyle (the Batman Forever episode) and we’ll be discussing Son Of The Mask, starring Jamie Kennedy.
On Monday July 10th, I’ll be recording with newcomer Noah and doing an episode on The Master Of Disguise starring Dana Carvey

Also, our 2-year anniversary episode will be released on Aug 4 as a special Friday drop. To celebrate, Kerry and I will be talking about the cult classic Howard The Duck, so you know that will be filled with duck puns. You could say it will be full to the bills (I’ll see myself out).
We’re also creeping up fast on our 100th episode. For that, we’ll be covering The Room. Yes, we’ll be saying hi to Mark, tossing the football around and making pseudo chicken sounds aplenty.

UPCOMING EPISODES – There Can Only Be One

Currently preparing my list for an episode on Me First & The Gimme Gimmes that I’ll be recording with Brian from My Weekly Mixtape (go check out Brian’s webpage at www.myweeklymixtape.com). If you like puck covers of songs that probably shouldn’t have been turned into punk songs in the first place, let us know what songs you put on your list.
In late August/early September, we will also be re-recording our episode on Candlebox. A little back story on this one, we had this episode recorded and ready to be released in time for us to go see them live on their farewell tour. Then, before the episode dropped, Candlebox announced their final album would be released in August. So, rather than drop the episode then have to do it all over again, we decided to shelve the recording and wait until the final album. With that said, if you have a chance to go see Candlebox on their last tour, do so. I can say that, as a fan, they will be sorely missed.

UPCOMING EPISODES – Grading On A Curve
It’s been a while that we have done a Grading episode, and there have been talks and initial plans for another episode. The hope is to release one sometime in August as part of our 2-year anniversary celebration. The plan is to do an episode on some of the worst movies based on video games. Would love to know which movies you would want us to tackle from this one.
Please take a moment to drop your thoughts, song choices and movie memories in the comments below. Some of the best parts of these episodes is hearing from you, so have your voice heard and help flush out the conversations about these films and musicians. Be sure to bookmark the website too, and check back as it’s my hope to update you weekly on all the things happening behind the scenes here at Not That bad Central.

There Can Only Be One – Michael Jackson

It’s hard enough as it is to pick one song off an album. However, that difficulty goes up a few degrees when you’re dealing with the studio discography of the King Of Pop, Michael Jackson. Music remixer ACOfficial joins the show to work our way through 12 studio albums, picking only one song off each.
Below, you will see the playlists made from the picks of both Alex and I. All albums were on Spotify, so no songs are missing from our choices. Have a listen and let us know if you agree with us. Also, be sure to let us know what songs you would have chosen in the comments section below. We love to hear from you.

Ep. 86 – The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Movies based on popular characters can go one of two ways. The first is that the property is treated horribly, the end result is disastrous and critics crap all over it. The other way is that a great movie is made, satisfying fans all over the world and raking in lots of money…and the critics crap all over it. This is definitely a category 2 situation, but it’s okay because The Super Mario Brothers Movie is not that bad.
